Active shooter prevention and
Survival training

What is Split Second Strategies Active Shooter prevention and Survival Training?

Split Second Strategies Active Shooter Prevention & Survival Training is a modern, evidence-based program designed to prepare individuals, families, and organizations to recognize threats early, respond decisively during an attack, and survive a violent encounter.

This training was built on a reality seen again and again after tragedies:

“I thought it was fireworks,”

“I thought it was construction noise,”

“I never thought it would happen here.”

That hesitation costs lives.

This program is intentionally designed to give people permission to believe what they are seeing and hearing is real, and to react without delay.

Participants learn practical, options-based survival strategies that guide what to do before, during, and after an active shooter incident.

They leave with a clear, personal action plan, increased confidence, and the ability to make fast, life-saving decisions when seconds matter most.

At Split Second Strategies, Active Shooter Survival Training is built on a simple but powerful belief: prevention and survival require different skill sets, and both matter. That is why our program is intentionally structured into two distinct, complementary courses:

1. Active Shooter Prevention Deep Dive

Duration:  1 hour

The Active Shooter Prevention Deep Dive is a dedicated, leadership-focused course designed for:

  • Owners and executives

  • HR professionals

  • Safety and security teams

  • Managers, supervisors, and team leads

  • Policy writers and organizational decision-makers

This course goes beyond basic awareness and focuses on the early warning signs, behavioral indicators, environmental risk factors, policy considerations, and leadership responsibilities that can stop violence before it ever reaches the point of an attack.

While this course is especially valuable for leadership and stakeholders, any employee who wants a deeper understanding of prevention and threat recognition can benefit from this training.

Prevention works best when awareness is shared.

2. Active Shooter Prevention & Survival Training

Duration: 2 hours

When an attack goes undetected, survival depends on clarity, speed, and decision-making under stress.

Split Second Strategies’ Active Shooter Prevention & Survival Training is an options-based program specifically designed to prepare people to:

  • Think for themselves under extreme pressure

  • Recognize rapidly changing conditions

  • Choose the best survival option in real time

  • Take responsibility for their own safety and the safety of others

This is not scripted, acronym-based training.

It is a real-world, decision-driven approach that prepares participants to respond based on what is actually happening around them.

3.  Last Resort Assailant Disarming Training

Duration: 1 hour

Class size limit: 15 students

Last Resort Assailant Disarming Training is an advanced, add-on course designed for the rare and critical moment when escape is not possible and lives are in immediate danger. This training focuses on defensive techniques taught strictly as a last resort, emphasizing awareness, decision-making, and survival.

Participants are guided through the realities of making a last-resort decision and the responsibility that comes with it.

Completion of Active Shooter Prevention & Survival Training is required prior to participaring in this course to ensure participants understand prevention, situational awareness, and response options before learning last-resort defensive techniques.

Students will experience:

  • Life saving techniques for disarming an assailant armed with a long gun or a handgun, as a last resort  to save their own life or the lives of others.

  • Understanding when and when not to attempt disarming, based on real-world conditions and available options.

  • Emphasis on full commitment and decisive action once a last-resort decision is made, including awareness of timing, opportunity, and positioning during high-risk moments.

  • Clear reinforcement that this is a personal decision; each individual must decide for themselves if this option is right for them in that moment.

4.  Building Walkthroughs & Workstation Visits

Duration: Varies by facility size and scope.   A custom quote will be provided after a consultation.

On-site evaluations to help organizations identify safety considerations and response options specific to their space.

  • On-site walkthroughs and workstation visits apply the Survival Steps & Options framework to each employee’s actual work area, identifying the most realistic response options for that specific location.
  • The process includes nearby exits, hide and barricade possibilities, and what the best first move looks like from where employees work each day, translating general training concepts into clear, location-specific actions that can be recalled under stress.

Together, These Four Courses Create a Complete Safety Model

  • Prevention Deep Dive – Learn how you can stop violence before it starts

  • Active Shooter Prevention and  Survival Training – Navigate violence if it cannot be stopped

  • Last Resort Assailant Disarming Training When all else fails, save your own life or the lives of others.
  • Building Walk-throughs and Work Station Visits -Identify safety considerations and response options specific to your own work space.

What makes Split Second Strategies Different from Other Active Shooter Training Classes?

Split Second Strategies Options Based Training

Plan Ahead

Think ahead about the places you frequent every day or every week and what options you would have if a gunman appeared. Know where your exits are and what lies beyond them.

Believe and React

Trust your instincts and believe what you are hearing and seeing is real. Believe that it is gunfire, react immediately, find cover, and decide your next move without hesitation. Do not pause in denial.

Get away/Call 911

Get away as fast as possible while calling 911. Take others with you when you can, pause before corners to listen, and keep moving with a survival mindset—even if injured.

Hide/ Barricade

If escape is not possible, find a room that locks and barricade the door with anything heavy. Turn off lights, silence your phone, and stay out of sight. If the door does not lock, hide behind it and be prepared to defend.

Attack/ Disarm

As a last resort to save your life or the lives of others, you may choose to attack and/or disarm the assailant. This decision requires total commitment and is best attempted during entry, distraction, or reloading.

When The Police Arrive

When police arrive, their focus is stopping the threat. Keep your hands empty and visible, expect direct commands, and follow all instructions without hesitation—even if you are injured.

Return/ Reunite

Once the incident is over, return to the designated reunification area when it is safe to do so. Reunite with others and provide your statement to law enforcement. If you cannot return, check in with family, coworkers, or leadership as soon as possible.

Split Second Strategies follows the “NO NOTORIETY” protocol.

Split Second Strategies follows the “No Notoriety” Protocol because prevention focused training should not amplify the recognition past assailants sought. For that reason, presentations do not include assailant names, images, manifesto content, or footage of real attacks. Graphic incident videos are not required for effective preparation. Instead, training relies on clear, practical instruction and professionally produced Split Second Strategies videos that reinforce response options without sensationalizing violence.

No Names

Assailant names are NOT used

No Manifestos

Manifesto videos or writings are used

No Attack Footage

0 %

63% of organizations that participated in a 2024 study* were NOT confident that their organization was prepared for an active assailant incident.

In that same study, 39% reported they do not have a comprehensive response plan for active assailant incidents.

On-Site Training

Split Second Strategies strongly recommends On Site Active Shooter Prevention & Survival Training whenever possible, particularly for organizations and teams. Training in the actual environment where people work, gather, and move every day allows participants to better understand their options, recognize real-world variables, and apply the training in a meaningful way.

In-person instruction also builds shared awareness and confidence among teams; something that cannot be fully replicated through online learning alone.

What Your Team Provides For On-Site Training:

  • A suitable meeting space that can accommodate your group, minimize distractions,, and allow participants to see and hear clearly.
  • A screen for visuals (projector and screen, or a large TV/monitor) that is visible from all seating areas.
  • Reliable audio (built-in TV audio for small groups, external speakers for larger rooms) so participants can hear all content.
  • Basic A/V Connections (HDMI preferred.  Adapters can be used as needed.)
  • Seating for attendees; tables optional.  Tables are not required but they support note-taking and course materials.
  • A point of contact on-site for room access, lights and A/V set-up and support.

Live Virtual Training

Live Virtual Training delivers the same instruction and core content as our in-person classes.

Classes offered as a webinar:

  • Active Shooter Prevention and Survival
  • Active Shooter Prevention Deep Dive

Both are taught live online with real-time interaction and Q&A, and they mirror the in-person experience in both material and outcomes.

Please note: Last Resort Assailant Disarming Training is not offered as a webinar. For local organizations in the midwest, a hybrid option is available: complete Active Shooter Prevention and Survival training virtually, then bring an instructor onsite to deliver the Last Resort Assailant Disarming Training in person.

ONLINE/On Demand COURSES

Active Shooter Prevention and Survival training online/on-demand courses are coming in the spring of 2026!  Fill out a contact form to be notified when they are live!

Who should attend Active Shooter Training?
